Dorothy Wordsworth was born in 1771 in Cockermouth, Cumberlandshire, to parents John and Anne Wordsworth. She was the only daughter, and the middle child of five. The death of her mother in 1778 resulted in Dorothy being sent to live with her mother’s cousin, Elizabeth Threlkeld Rawson of Halifax (Levin xv). This experience, however, separated her from her father and her brothers, who were sent away to school, for the next four years. During her time with “Aunt” Elizabeth, Dorothy developed a passion for English, Greek, and Roman literature, while also creating a lifelong friendship with Jane Pollard. In 1783, after her father’s death, Dorothy was sent to live with her maternal grandparents, the Cooksons, and an uncle who did not approve of her literary endeavours. “Luckily, another uncle, the Reverend Dr. William Cookson, captivated by her intelligence and industry, arranged for Dorothy to live with him and his wife at Forncett” (Levin xvi), where she continued to develop her passi
